Tattoo Healing Guide
How to heal faster, protect your ink, and keep tattoos looking sharp
Getting a tattoo is just the start. Proper aftercare is what determines how your ink heals, how vibrant it stays, and how it looks years down the line.
INK8 was created specifically for tattooed skin — not repurposed skincare. Follow this simple guide to give your tattoo the care it actually needs.
The Tattoo Healing Timeline
Every tattoo heals a little differently, but most follow this pattern.
Day 1–3: Clean & Protect
Your tattoo is an open wound. Keep it clean and calm.
What to do
- Gently wash 2–3 times per day with a mild, tattoo-safe cleanser
- Pat dry with a clean towel (don’t rub)
- Apply a thin layer of tattoo-safe conditioning product if recommended by your artist
What to avoid
- Harsh soaps or alcohol-based products
- Overwashing
- Tight clothing rubbing the area
Day 4–7: Heal & Hydrate
This is when flaking and itchiness usually begin — totally normal.
What to do
- Continue gentle daily cleansing
- Apply a light layer of conditioning balm to keep skin comfortable
- Let your tattoo breathe between applications
What to avoid
- Picking flakes or scabs
- Thick, greasy layers of product
- Soaking (baths, pools, hot tubs)
💡 Over-moisturizing can slow healing. Less is more.
Week 2–4: Lock In Your Ink
Your tattoo may look healed on the surface, but deeper layers are still repairing.
What to do
- Clean once daily
- Moisturize regularly to support skin elasticity
- Start thinking long-term skin care
What to avoid
- Prolonged sun exposure
- Skipping hydration
✨ Consistent conditioning helps preserve ink clarity and contrast.
What NOT to Use on Tattoos
Not all skincare belongs on tattooed skin.
Avoid:
- Petroleum-heavy products
- Strong fragrances
- Alcohol-based cleansers
- Exfoliants during healing
Tattooed skin needs balance, not aggression.
Common Tattoo Aftercare Questions
How often should I wash my tattoo?
2–3 times daily during the first week, then once daily as healing progresses.
Is light fragrance okay?
Light, skin-safe fragrance is fine for most people. Always patch test if you’re sensitive.
When can I stop aftercare?
Once flaking ends, switch from healing to maintenance — your ink benefits from care.
